About Acid Dyes

Acid dyes are water-soluble anionic dyes mainly used to color proteinfibers and polyamides. They work in an acidic dye bath, where the dye bonds tothe fiber through ionic attraction.

Main Applications

Textile Industry (Primary Use)

• Wool
• Silk
• Nylon (polyamide)

Used for:

• Garments (shawls, scarves, sweaters)
• Carpets and rugs
• Hosiery

Leather Industry

• Dyeing of leather goods
• Provides uniform and bright shades

Carpet & Rug Industry

• Widely used due to:
• Good leveling properties
• Bright colors

Ink & Paper (Limited Use)

• Some acid dyes are used in:
• Inks
• Specialty paper coloring

Types of Acid Dyes

1. Leveling Acid Dyes
• Excellent uniform dyeing
• Lower wash fastness
2. Milling Acid Dyes
• Better wash fastness
• Used for wool
3. Metal Complex Acid Dyes
• Contain metal ions (Cr, Co)
• Very good light & wash fastness

Key Advantages

• Bright and wide color range
• Good affinity for protein fibers
• Smooth, even dyeing (leveling)

Limitations

• Not suitable for cotton (cellulosic fibers)
• Moderate wash fastness (except metal complex types)
• Requires controlled acidic conditions
